question from a newbie...please help.

Spence.. adding a body lift will only raise the center of gravity on your Explorer. It will not really change the feel of the ride. It will by no means (really) make the ride any less safe. I have the 3" on mine and love it.
Installing the lift is fairly easy and straight forward. There are many good writeups on this site that take you step by step through the process.
Since you have a 96 Explorer... I recommend getting the Performance Accessories 95-97 Ranger kit. That way you'll only need to make/buy bumper brackets. You can go to my site in my sig for a little writeup on my lift.

Well, you'll probably want to do the torsion twist no matter what. Its an easy way to get 2" of lift. Combine that with a body lift and you'll get 5" for under $200.
Since you have the manual, you'll need to buy the extension for the shifter as well. Its the same as the Ranger one. I think its another $14 or so.
As far as tools and knowledge... back when I did mine I had little knowledge about body lifts. You just gotta do it! If you can change your oil.. you can install a body lift!
Tools.. you'll need a floor jack, some jack stands, sockets, some channel locks and vise grips.. hammer (big one!).. a drill and 1/2" bit... some 4x4s to place between the jack and your body.
Someone had a really good writeup with a list if tools they used.. anyone know who that was?
