Question on buying new rotors.

I'm about 16,000mi away from 100K miles and am already starting my list of parts since I plan on doing a lot of work at that point.

Now to the question, I'm researching the rotors and my two options from the same company (EBC Brakes) have a very slight size difference.

1. Outer diameter = 11.810 inches
2. Outer diameter = 11.9

I know how small that difference is, but why is there a difference? And how will I know which to choose?

And yes they are both specified for my model.

I don't know for sure if this is the reason for the difference in your rotor diameter question, but I know from looking up brake replacement parts at auto parts web sites is you will get parts listed for your vehicle specs that come with a different part numbers under the same manufacturer, yet the web site tells you they all fit your vehicle. I asked a parts store clerk about this difference in part numbers and how do I know which one to buy for my vehicle and he told me that the difference in the parts and part numbers were due to wheel size, like whether your vehicle came with 16 in or 17 in wheels. I think these Explorers came with either a 16 in wheel or a 17 in wheel. Maybe that is why you have a slight difference in rotor diameters because one is used on vehicles with a 16 in wheel, and the other is used for vehicles with the 17 wheel? Just my hunch on it.

I wondered if it was just due to different models of rotors. Plain vs slotted vs slotted and dimpled....maybe the difference is due to the manufacturing process. It is only .09" difference after all. Or it could even be a typo of some sort on their specs...maybe they rounded up on one of them or something.

That actually seems to make sense, I don't know how it does but you putting it that was seems very possible.

I'll just measure the rotors one day and see what I get then...lets hope it's not right in the middle

I doubt it really matters. There's much more space available in the caliper mount to make .09" totally pointless... I'm sure you'll be fine with either one. When I do mine I'm going with drilled rotors...

I was thinking a vehicle with a 16 in wheel used a smaller diameter rotor than a vehicle that came with 17 in wheels. I know from the parts web sites I have used, when you select the year, make, model and engine size of your vehicle to start looking up parts for that vehicle, they never give you an option for your specific wheel size for that vehicle. So when you look up any parts that involve the brakes, they just give you the whole listing of parts that fit the vehicle specs you selected in the beginning of your parts search. I only found out that the difference in brake part numbers was due to the wheel size was by calling up the local store and asking the clerk about it.

Maybe just call ahead to the place you are ordering them from and ask about the difference and why they are like that. See what they say.

Be careful with those drilled rotors getting wet while hot(off road) are very prone to cracking..
I'm going to bap-geon(import auto parts lol) for a quality set of brembo blanks all around for less than $200...
