Anyone know why the "rear control" heat/ac seems to come on without warning? Seems every so often the rear vents come on, and it's a PIA to go into the menu and shut off

I have never had it happen as far as I know. I'm always the only occupant. I would think that if the rear HVAC system was set to OFF that it should remain that way. Even if the system is set to Auto, I'm guessing. Is there a reason they can't just be left ON when they do 'self' operate?
Is the vehicle still under warranty? Have you had the dealer check it out?

No auto option for the rear in my 20 Limited, unfortunately.
Never have had it change from how I have it set.
I keep the rear controls locked & set to the lowest fan speed & usually coldest setting (Houston temps & humidity) & adjust via the main screen & the Rear button in the climate hard controls on the dash when needed.
If I've got adult passengers, I'll unlock the rear control.

I'll double check the menu but I'm pretty sure the rear heat controls come on as if they had a mind of their own. Not sure about cooling cycle. I don't like heating/cooling the rear if there's no one there- just seems inefficient

^ My thinking is the opposite, the front won't have to work as hard/long to cool the rear if the rear is on at a similar setting to the front

I don't know for any certainty but my assumption would be that there is not an additional heating / cooling mechanism for the rear and likely only uses additional ducts, doors, and maybe fans. I doubt you could actually heat the front and cool the rear at the same time.

There are several issues with leaking cooling lines going to the rear HVAC units on the 5th gen Explorer.
