I have a 1999 Explorer XLT, my wife has a 2001 Escape. I'd like to have one key to work both on my ring. Is there a way that I can have a replacement key cut that would work the door/ignition in both vehicles. I know that this was possible on Ford vans 15-20 years ago, where the doors/ignition locks would only "read" one side of the key, so one key could be cut to work 2 vans. Is this possible with the Explorer and Escape? Is there a way to reprogram the anti-theft chip-reader deal to get over that hurdle?

Thank you.

os1, you could probably cut the key different on each side, so that one key would work on both locks, by turning the key over. However, I know of no way to re-program the PATS system module.

You could try it with an extra key. Have it cut for both vehicles, and then program the key to work with both vehicles PATS modules (they will accept up to 6-8 key codes). It might work.....

There is a procedure in your owners manual for programming the new key yourself; it takes about 5 minutes and you need two keys that will already work.
