Hey guys, I have some questions. I've been looking for a new vehicle and have decided on an Explorer. I found a 96 Sport, 4x4, 5 speed, in really great shape for $5995. It does have 108,000 miles though. How does the price sound? And how long do these motors generally last? I don't want to lose a bunch of money and buy a new car a few months/years down the line. Thanks.

what about the tranny? that'll go before the motor in most cases.

check the A/C................search for "blend door"
you got many miles left in the 4.0 OHV, the tranny may be a problem tho

I just bought a 97 sport 4x4 5spd auto tranny w/ 121k and it runs pretty damn good. I have been quite skepitcal of the trannys on these things after reading all the posts about tranny problems on this site...Don't know too much about the history as I bought it wholesale from carmax. Before they sold it they did do a through check and everything was ok. Since it has so many mile on it, i just drive it like my grandfather cause it's gotta last me through the winter....I also have a problem with the Blend door and cold air will only come out on A/C max, but i can live with that for now.

If you do buy it, change the tranny fluid right away and change it often thereafter. That's what I am going to do...

you said 5 speed...
did you mean 5 speed manual? my explorer has the same engine and 5 speed manual. i have over 160K miles. the engine runs great. doesnt burn or leak any oil. the transmission is excellent. it's still the original clutch. after more than 160,000 miles, the only thing to go wrong was the starter died. no big deal, i popped the clutch and drove home. i bought a new starter the next day.

the OHV engine and manual transmission is the most reliablle setup you can get in an explorer.
