I learn more about mechanics every time something goes wrong on my explorer
. So on some things I consider myself fairly proficient while I'm completely ignorant on others.
My four wheel drive dash light have been flashing intermittently with no apparent pattern. I've read through various threads on these forums about this problem but don't understand some of the parts people are talking about or how to identify them under the vehicle. I know cleaning the sensors was a common remedy to the problem.
Is this a sensor?
Also, the rear of the transfer case was quite dirty or "gunky" originating around this (I wiped the gunk off before the picture), could this be an issue?
Finally here is a picture of the two components relative to the U-joint at the rear of the transfer case:
I suppose finally I should mention more about the problems I've had with 4WD. The dash lights will flash occasionally, then not for weeks at at a time. The lights indicate I can transfer into 4WD High, although I haven't tested to see if I actually am. I have not been able to transfer into 4WD Low.
On a side note, this may have been a coincidence but that seems unlikely. I've had the flashing 4WD lights for a while, but when they came on today they were accompanied by lack of power windows. I had zero control of power windows for approximately 2 minutes before they suddenly worked. This happened twice after start-up but hasn't happened again since.
Thank You
