Quick head unit question

Will a F87F-18C868-AD model fit in a '98 mountaineer? Also, what are the general rules... What years match. Reason I ask is my friend needs a new head unit for his '98 Mountaineer and I'm lookin on eBay for him. Thanks.

Any stock HU 98+ will fit, assuming it is from the same vehicle or a similar size.

Depends on if he has MACH or not

The F87F-18C868-AD radio is the right one IF he has a Mach Audio System (with factory Subwoofer) - about 65% of Mountaineers do. That part number is good for 1998 thru 2001 (the I/P changed in 2002, requiring a "bolt-in" style radio). If he did not have Mach Audio, this radio will not sound right. It will not have any bass response, as the bass signals are supposed to go to an external subwoofer amp.

If the Mountaineer did NOT have Mach Audio, you need an F87F-18C868-CD, or an XL2F-18C868-AB radio.

An F87F-18C868-BD radio will fit, but it will NOT sound right, either, as it is EQ'd for a 2 door model Explorer.
