QUICK HELP: 2001 4WD NO WORKY... at stealership

Hi guys, so I'm sure most of you have seen this damn money pit of mine... I bought it "mint" from a Stealership in Chicago. Me being the dumb guy I am, did not even check to see if 4wd worked when I received the truck. Instead I tore it apart to put the lift(s) and other parts on it.

So my wife tried 4wd last week and it had no lights come on, no clicking, etc etc all the signs for a bad control module that I've read from my searches. Of course I'm out of the country and can't trouble shoot it myself so I told her to take it to the local Ford Stealership.

That guy just called me and said it was the transfer motor and should be $580... I tell him it can't be and has to be the control module from all the signs. He said he hooked it up and the truck was showing a code for the transfer motor??? This is where I need help... you think it would throw a code for the control module, not the transfer motor correct??

Please help point me in the correct direction so I know if I need to boot this guy for trying to pull my leg when I'm out of the country.

No lights and no clicking would not make me replace the shift motor. These are bad to corrode/oxidize the connections at the module. Lots of times just unplugging and reconnecting the wiring connectors at the module will put it back to working. Shift motors are $75-$200 depending on the brand. They ARE available aftermarket. Not saying they are jacking you up but 90% of electrical problems are in the connectors. Sucks not being there to take care of it yourself!

Oh, ask him the code he's referring to!

Possible Sources
Four-wheel drive (4WD) control module.
Central Junction Box (CJB).
CJB fuse 35 (15A).
CJB fuse 10 (7.5A).
Circuitry.

The codes they gave me were, P1867 and P1891.

P1867: Transmission Transfer Case Contact Plate General Circuit Failure (source: 4wd control module)
P1891: Transmission Transfer Case Contact Plate Ground Return Open Circuit (source: 4wd control module)

I called the dealership and said it was the control module and not the transfer motor and that guy said "we've been working on Fords longer than you, we're not here to waste time and money" and then hung up on me. I don't think he realizes A. I'm 6'4" 265lbs bodybuilder and B. My best friend is the daughter of the owner of the dealership. He better watch it...

Considering you're out of the country and Mr. FKIA-hang-up-on-your-azz Tech can't appreciate your size I think BFF's influence would prove more beneficial. Probably keep you from getting shot or arrested at the least.:D

I'm sure it's just bad oxidized contacts because it was a "mint" chicago truck, and the undercarriage of that thing was scary. I think I broke off every bolt when doing that body lift. The thing that bothers me is they said they put in a brand new transfer motor. When I get home this weekend you better believe I'm going to crawl under that and make sure it's a brand new motor... and I'm also going to check the passenger kick panel and see if they fumbled around with that module. I have no problem paying someone good $$ to do work as long as they fix what's truly wrong.

They just called me and said my 4wd is good to go now. Don't worry, I'm a big teddy bear, so when I go in I'll just check out the invoice real well.

you should of just done the 5.0 v8 4406 swap. lol you know you wanted too.
