OK, so after my happy post about getting my fourth Exploder, I go to lunch and start the truck and see that the starter no-wanna disconnect. I keep hearing the thing spinning and I shut it off. I did a search to see who else had this and no takers. Is it the whole starter or just perhaps a relay? What controls the pushout to get the starter on the flywheel? If I do a quicky start(about 2 cranks) it is ok, but sometimes doen't start. If held for longer than a couple turns it sticks. Suggestions? If new starter, name some good ones. Thanks.

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. Turned out to be one of the starter selinoids (There are 2). The one mounted above my air box on the wall was the bad one. New one cost me $14.95, easy to replace. Run a check on the electrical system, it should turn up a failure point if your car still starts. By the way i have a 92 explorer later models might be mounted else where.

Hope this helps

Mine started doing it one week after I had done a couple of runs with deep river crossings. I theorized the water had washed some lube off of the starter shaft, so I removed my starter (peice of cake, two bolts, though the top one is a pain to get to), shot the starter shaft with a few squirts of WD40, and fixed the problem.

I had this problem three years ago. The starter wouldn't stop turning even after the key was turned off. The only way to stop the starter from turning was to disconnect the battery. On mine it was the solenoid on the starter. Since I replaced it I have had no problems at all with the starter.

Gerald, interesting point, I had gone through quite a few deep puddles( truck has a mind of its <-{used correctly} and seem to steer towards those things). Something could have just gotten damp as it rained all day yesterday and heavy downpours at times. Today, bright, sunny and dry - no problems. Thanks for the help guys.

same thing happened to mine a few years ago. even with the key off it was still cranking. had to disconnect battery, the starter was pulling so much juice that my battery cables were smoking!
