We are looking at two Explorer Sports, one is a 2016, other is a 2018. Both have the same 3.5T , but are they the same ??

I have researched and there was a gen 2 introduced in 2018, with improved timing chains and guides, but was it only used in the F150's and lincolns ??

This will be our 5th Explorer.

You're correct in that the motor is the same in the 2016 and 2018.

The Gen2 3.5L EcoBoost is only available in Ford and Lincoln full size vehicles (F-150, Expedition, Navigator) and the Ford GT with various output levels. In addition to re-designed timing chain (thicker dual chains instead of single chain) it also features auto start/stop and most importantly in my opinion, both port and direct fuel injection which solves the issue of carbon buildup on the intake valves.

I wish they offered it on the Fifth and Sixth gen Explorers but they decided not to. They stuck with the DI-only EcoBoost designs in the Explorer, Aviator, and Bronco Raptor.

The engine will be the same in both the 2016 and 2018. However if you're trying to decide between them, one thing you might consider is that the 2017 and up Explorers added Sync 3 to the infotainment system. If equipped, this gives you access to a more modern infotainment system including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto if you should find that appealing. I use CarPlay every single day, so for me, I only shopped for 2017 and up models.
