rack & pinion repair or replace

Hi I'm new to this forum. I have a 2001 ford ranger supper cab that the rack & pinion jerks when you turn the wheel the alignment man said I would have to replace it. It's not leaking can they be repaired or just have to replace them. If I have to replace it how big a job is it? Thanks for any help Thomas.

Welcome to this forum! It might be a problem with the pump or one of the front end components. Did you check the fluid level? Does it make a whining noise when you turn the steering wheel?

Fluid level ok no pump noise.

Mine makes a whining noise when turning. Does that mean it needs replacing? I see no leak.

It could be a bad pump or just air in the system.

I had a similar proble in my F350, and it was just air in the system.
