Bought this X second hand. Radio is flakie. some times it works, sometimes the stations just keeps scanning and the volume works sometimes...I think it's an electrical mess.
If anyone has suggestions as to what is wrong with the radio..I'll take it. otherwise how do I get this radio out? It looks like the radio is actually behind the center panel, does that have to come out?

I believe your going to need to remove the dash panel and get a radio tool to remove radio..

There should be two holes on each side of the radio. You can get a U shaped removal tool at wal-mart. You use it to compress the springs on the radio chasis trhough those holes, and pull the radio out. You shouldn't have to remove the dash.

The tool is less than $10. Or, if you're cheap like me, just use two pieces of clothes hanger.

Thanks. It's the wifes vehicle so I will have to eyeball these holes. (don't remember seeing them).

I guess the setup is pretty much like the "DIN" setup. maybe it is the DIN setup.

THANKS

u can by that tool or slip a butter spreader on the sides to compress the springs as u slide it out By the way u don't need to take apart any of the dash

depends on the year, but i know for my car i DID have to take off the dash to get to the radio

For 1991-1994 Explorers you will need to remove the front bezel on the dash. To do this you need to pull the ash tray out, unscrew the 2 torx screws and pull the front bezel face off. It is friction fit so you will need to pull kind of hard. If it has 4x4 you will need to unplug the 4x4 high/low switch after you pull the bezel out a little ways to unplug the harness. Once this bezel is off you will see the 4 holes on the radio that was talked about. They are currently hidden behind the bezel. If you need more assistance let me know. I have taken mine off too many times to count. Otherwise if you want some pictures A haynes or chilton repair manual walks you through it. This is how I learned. Good luck

Actually....the dash was changed in 1993.....the hole was made bigger for the radio. 93-94 dashes do not need to be taken apart to get the stock radio out.

1991-92 However is different. About the only thing Im will add to the above post is this....

It is easier to remove the dash pice if the trans shifter is in the 1st gear position. Just gently turn the igntiton key enough to let the gear selector move, have the brake set, and shift it down all the way.

Have the door open also, as the dash is tight there...

I can have the wole thing apart in less than ten minutes with that easy method. Good luck.

Thanks, I thought the radio was behind the dash. Good going Ford.

Thanks
