Probably a really dumb question but how do you remove the stock radio from a 1998 Explorer XLT? Does it require a special tool to slide in alongside the radio?

Requires a Ford radio removal tool.
There's 2 holes on each side of the radio, put the tools in, push them outwards then pull the radio out..

You can also do it with 4 thin screwdrivers.. not recommended, but doable.

Four 8d nails work like a charm.

metal coat hanger bent in a "U" shape works as well. if you cant get it free from using nails, or a coat hanger, there are two blots just above the heater controls. unscrew those, pop out the radio bezel, and push the metal tabs in on the sides of the radio from the back side.

Another good suggestion. Thanks.
