Rag Sucked into intake

Anyone know if I can remove the rocker cover and depress both valves?

Valve spring compressor

It takes a special (and expensive $160) tool to compress the valve spring on the SOHC V6 and only one valve can be depressed at a time.

Cool can probably borrow or rent it when you say only one at a time if the cam is holding the intake open i can use the tool to open the exhaust at the same time?

Thanks just got the rocker cover off (what a pain in the ass) got some connections for the compression tool, I'm pretty sure now I'm stuck on that Exhaust valve thanks for the help

How to post photos

Inspect the cassette

While you have the valve cover off take a few minutes to inspect the timing chain guide assembly. Which side do you have off?

If you position the crankshaft so one valve is fully depressed by the camshaft lobe then you don't have to worry about the other valve striking the piston when you depress it with the tool. The difficult part may be pulling on the rag with one hand while keeping the valve depressed with the tool using the other hand. You'll probably need a breaker bar for the required leverage.

Make sure the valve stem keepers stay in place when you compress the valve spring or the valve could drop into the cylinder and you'll have to pull the head (replace head gasket, head bolts and retime camshaft with special tool set).

Thankyou for that handy little tidbit I might have missed that otherwise. I have the passsengerside off what exactly should I look for on the timing chain assembly?

check for broken guide

There is a slot in the upper end of the traction side of the guide. A positioning post keeps the guide in place as shown below.

Grab the end of the guide with your thumb and fingers and try to pull it upward. The vertical movement should only be about 1/16th inch. If it moves 1/8th inch or more the guide is probably broken lower down.

The photos below attempt to show the lower section of the guide on the traction side.

Follow it down with your finger reaching as far as possible and then attempt to move it sideways. If it moves it is probably broken. You won't be able to see much on the slack side because of the hood and the heater blower box blocking your view. I tried to use my camera and also a mirror but was not very successful. Try using your fingers to feel for any breaks. The photo below by CDW6212R shows what you are trying to see.

SUCCESS.... That dirty rag it out and it appears to have done no damage, I'm semi relived we'll see what happens when it's buttoned up

LMAO note the careful placement of PAPER TOWEL in the intake ports, Lessons learned hardest are lessons learned bestist!

Love it, what a great oops. Here I was figuring it was a thick cloth rag though. I was wondering how the engine was even able to run with that little air coming in, but I guess the IAC would take care of it.
