Will the manual transmission from a 87' Ranger fit a 94' xl? Some considerations like bell housings and such. I know that the Ranger tranny has the hydrolic clutch engage.

Thanks,

I think it will "fit" as in bolt into place. From what I can see, the 2.9 and 4.0 share bellhousing bolt patterns and such. There is some question of whether you would need the driveshaft shortened or lengthened.
Main concern I would have is that the '87 transmission is likely an FM145 Mitsubishi trans. They had input bearing issues. From what I've gathered, the best manual tranny put in Ranger based vehicles is the Mazda M5OD that is currently in your Explorer. While the FM145 or FM 146 (or the earlier TK5) may "fit," it seems like a step backwards to giveup a Mazda tranny for the Mitsubishi tranny.

Thanks for the info and the link. My transmission is getting a little cranky, that is, overdrive has developed a whine and first gear sync. is touchy. It also is wanting to jump out of first gear if I don't keep in place.
I found this Ranger tranny freshly rebuilt and on a guys shelf. Its sounding like I ought to find another M5OD and rebuild it. I was kind of liking the idea of having the fresh extra on hand.

Thanks guys,
