Rattle/ping from engine

Hello folks,

Well, my 99 4.0 has over the last month developed a strange sound, almost like a rattle/pinging or a bit like marbles in a bucket.

This quite loud sound comes from the engine especially when cold and under slight acceleration. When you take you foot off the gas, it stops....
When it gets hot, the sound almost disappear, but can still be heard...again only under slight acceleration.

Someone mentioned cam chain tensioner, but.. ??? ..also., my own thoughts went towards piston slap, but then again, it only has 35K miles on it, so that does not make sense either...

Is your engine the OHV or the SOHC? If it's an OHV, it's probably piston slap. This is a known problem with the '99 OHV. If it's a SOHC, it could be the cam chain tensioner.

So it sounds like marbles not like say a diesel engine?

Yes, right enough,,,the sound could be compared to a noisy Diesel engine

well if yours is like mine i had trouble keeping it started first thing in the morning or after it sits a long time. There is good news i had the problem fixed and it is in the throttle sticking not a bad lifter. your ford dealer or mechanic can fix it quickand easy
