I have '97 SOHC with 150000 miles. Just after ignition my engine rattles for half a second and then everything is OK. I 've heard of SOHC problems with timing chain tensioner and I ask myself is it the beggining ? I bought my explo second hand and I don't know the car history. Was it serviced due to the bad tensioners or not ...Help, what is the reason of such a short lasting noise.

Welcome back, Artur. E-mail me the VIN number off your truck and I can run it and see if the tensioner issue was fixed under warranty or not.

Also, my tensioners were replaced under warranty in 2000, and mine does that when it's cold outside. I've found that running 5W30 motor oil in the wintertime, spring, and fall makes a big difference.

Mine has always done that since i bought it wit 30,000 - main dealer serviced from new

It's a hydraulic tensioner - if the oil leaks down, it rattles until the oil pressure builds back up.

hydraulic tensioner

OK, but where is hydraulic tensioner ?How to replace it. Give me any idea.

One other thought -

If you can track it back to the original dealer where it was bought, maybe the original owner had it serviced there for the recall.

I got lucky on my 1999 4.0 SOHC record search that I bought last month and confirmed with the original dealer that it had indeed been done!

does this happen with ohv's cause mine does this too. i think its the hydraulic lifters. can a oil leak cause this noise at startup. i've been searching, cant find anything on this subject.

The tensioners are on the left side of each cylinder head. The passenger side tensioner is on the rear of the head, and can be accessed through the passenger side wheelwell. The drivers side tensioner is at the front, but the upper intake needs to be removed to get to it. For the front tensioner, you will need the 00M12 kit, which has the tensioner and the gaskets to seal the upper intake. Both tensioners should require a 1 1/8" socket to remove.
