So I searched for Clunk, and other things like bang, with the ol search button and every thread has a clunk instance in it. Ford forum. :D

My 1993 4x4 drives great in 2wd, handles nice, no strange noises, besides the 31" mt's melodic hum. Shift into 4x4 (auto hubs) and engagement happens just like it should. Good at standstill or low speeds. Same with 4lo(in neutral, stopped). However, when moving in 4hi/4lo on gravel, snow, road, dirt, there is a gruesome clunk under my left foot. It is random but frequent. Sounds like "BAD". It sounds like/feels like I ran over something hard, or that the wheel binds on something. Hard to describe. Radius arm bushings were just replaced this week(moog), and ball joints/ujoints are ok, wheel bearings are ok (said the shop). Soemthing is binding/wearing somewhere and i need to find it.

My other 1993 4x4 has never made this clunk noise.

Any similar gruesome clunk fans out there? Any solutions?

A bad auto hub comes to mind. Mine (back when I had auto hubs) would sound like an axle snapping!

yep

Thats the exact BAD that it sounds like. An axle snapping. What better time for a manual hub conversion. :D

I had the same exact noise. I pulled the auto hubs off, cleaned the spindles, soaked the hubs in brake cleaner, then hot ATF (overnight), put them all back together and everything was as good as new.

Yup sure sign of an auto hub going bad. I had the same problem, the hub engaged and disengaged, but while moving above 20kph felt like I ran over auto parts. Thanks to Fordnut71 I have a new/used hub and all is great....

Thanks a lot!

Manual Hub Conversion coming soon. Real soon...

I think I have abroken auto hub, so I'm planning on doing the manual hub conversion. I have a 92 X, so the manual hubs are Warn part number 29071.
For the conversion kit, I have seen two part numbers listed in the online sources: 27997 and 32720. Which is the correct kit for the first gen X?

Thank you.

Bob

27997 is the right one

Great info in this site, what don't you guys know??? I bet you guys knew it was 42 a long time ago...:D
