REALLY stupid question...

How do you know if your vehicle is misfiring? There is no rough idle.... but the HCs are high on my emissions- and this is an indication of misfiring. What does it feel like, and how do I know when/if it is happening???

Trust me, you will know when it's misfiring. If you're not sure, it's not misfiring. It will run really rough, and you'll be able to hear/feel it in the exhaust.

I know on big rigs i can shut down one cylinder at a time to see witch one is misfireing. can i do that on my own with a good scan tool? but otherwise he is right. you would feal it if it was.

No, but you can unplug spark plug wires one by one to see which one makes a difference. Just be careful, don't get in the way of that spark.

I don't know if a '99 has a built in cylinder balance test. I do know that '93 and '94 Explorers ( or other EEC-IV equipped vehicles with SEFI) have a built in cylinder balance test.
