2001 Sport Trac
We recently got a 2001 Sport Trac. Got the shocks replaced, made a huge differfence. Old ones were shot!
New problem now. It started when we drove down the street, and heard a clunking, just like when the lug nuts are loose. Pulled over and chaecked, all were tight. Took it back home and pulled the right rear wheel and drum, put them back on and tightened lugs again. While still on the jack, I notived I could move the wheel and hub in and out, seemed like about 1/4". Parked for the night. Someone suggested replacing the c-clips. So, we did that. Left side axle has no measurable end play, right side has 1/16" as measured with a tape measure.
Now I'm not sure where to go from here. I can't see it being a bearing problem, though there is no up and down movement (good thing).
Any advice? We're planning to put about 1000 miles on it this weekend, but we may have to go to plan B.

As clutch plates wear in a limited slip rear diff they can create some endplay. Check out this website.

It shows a rear diff rebuild. The author goes into a pretty good detail about the friction plates and the shims and how thickness is affected.

Thanks for the info. I'm now in info overload! ;)

How do I know if we have tractionlock?
