I blew out the spider gears in my 2002 Sport Trac. I tore everything apart this evening.

Checking out Summit Racings website, I find you can buy clutches for the LSD for about $109.00 and spider gears for $120.00. On the other hand, I can buy the complete carrier with new clutches and gears. All I need to switch is the ring gear and tone ring.

The question is, if I were to install a new carrier, would I need to get the gears set, or would it be Ok to leave everything else alone?

You will need to reset the gears, make sure the backlash is the same as it is right now and that the picture is the same as it is right now. You will need to check the backlash and picture before removing the carrier and after installing the new carrier you will want to bring it back to the same spec's. You might get lucky and it will be good to go or you might need to change the shims around a bit.

Hey Caymen, glad you could make it over here. I'm thinking I need to rebuild my rearend too, I have alot of side-side play on the axles. I'd really like to wait 'til Iupgrade my gears to 4.56's and do my SAS, SOA because I don't wanna waste the money reagering the IFS and then build a SAS.

Oh, by the way, it's Jerry from the ST site.

Hello Jerry...

We just picked up a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer Premier for the wife and baby, so I got my Trac and the old Explorer. Gonna take it to Yankee Lake this summer.

Anyways, I am still trying to get used to this type of board. Personally I hate it, but it is what it is. Hopefully the resident idiots ot the ST website are not here.

Hugh, SteveM, Steve from hawaii are on here but none of the older annoying members that like to fight are on here. I don't think I've every seen a fight on here since I've been on here.

It took me awhile to get used to this board setup, still don't know all the in/ outs on here but I see find what I look for pretty easy and I'm by no means a computer guy.

Lol.

Caymen is a good guy, he get's messed with too much for no reason on the ST site.

Caymen definitely knows his stuff. I've used his technical advice on several occasions. No regrets yet.

Well, the carrier is back together. As soon as the weather breaks, I need to flush out the axle housing before I put it all together.

Thanks to all that posted pictures on other threads regarding rebuilding the spider gears. Got some great information and I greatly appreciate it.

Wednesday and Thursday look to be the best days. We just got more snow today and colder temps tomorrow.

Glad to hear the Ex will still be going strong, how many miles does it have now?

Yea, hopefully I can get it together then.

The 2000 Explorer XLT has 220,000 miles.
The 2002 Sport Trac has 120,000 miles.
The 2006 Mountaineer has 86,000 miles.

Now I am on the look for a repair DVD for the 2006. Any ideas?

What's wrong with it? Check out the 2006-2010 forum four sections down from this one.
