My 2002 XLT 4.6 v8 explorer has the alum rear end housing. I would like to change the fluid. Looking at the housing there is a large square nut that appears to be the drain plug. How do I remove the large drain plug? Is there a special tool needed? Thanks

should be3/8 inch and you should be able to use a ratchet with an extension to turn it..

Does this have a drain and fill plug?

I was curious of this large plug myself 3/4" ratchet or so, is it the drain? I pulled the smaller plug 3/8" ratchet and 8 or 10oz's or fluid came pouring out. Wanted to add friction modifier, thinking this plug was level check plug. Had to jack the rear end a mile in the air to get fluid back in. Doe anyone know of a better way to refill the differential? I used a 3/4 inch ratchet I just happened to have for the lugs on my motorhome to remove the drain plug. I then refilled with Mobil1 synthetic using the small 3/8 inch ratchet check plug, a hose and a pump while level on the ground.
