What happening got a 2002 explorer has a humming sound in the rear of the truck.I know of ford rear end problems. I hope this is not major problem.
Its not the tires,You hear it when you go over 45,50. On the highway is most noticeable it a stead hum.

Thanks Ron

After you drive it for a while feel the diff. If its really hot the fluid might be low.

Might be a little late for this post but I have the same problem with my 02' took it in under the 3 year 36,000 warranty (even though i purchased the extended warranty bought it a year old with 24,000 on it.) Long story short took it in and they said they found a axle bearing bad. and it corrected the problem for awhile but 15,000 miles since problem came back and sounds the same hmm on highway above 50 mph. Hope this helps....

I had the same problem. Hadto have BOTH wheel bearings replaced. They said that they were on the verge of locking up, and at highway speeds locking up would cause the truck to become uncontrollable and probably roll.

I had them both replaced as well as one of the rear rotors for just under $1000. This was at about 56,000 miles.

My '02 had the same problem (humming from rear). I thought it was the tires, replaced them and still humming from rear. Had both rear wheel bearings replaced along with both rear axle seals for $600 at dealer. That was at 62K miles.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
