Rear end noise.

I have a 2003 Explorer with 108,000 miles that has a loud rear end noise that I think is coming from the differential. Is there anything I can do the stop it myself or is this something that has to be done at a shop? I do most of my auto work myself but I've never delt with the rear end.
Any help would be appreciated.
