rear end sagging question

Robert, no problem. I can take a measurement tonight when I get home, my tank is almost full. The only thing is...it will take me about 3 weeks or so to run through the tank of gas. I don't drive my X much during the week, so it will be awhile before the "empty" measurement.

Post your tire size too !! I'll compare mine to yours.

Really ? Single spring and I can not add on ?
Are there any other reasonable soultions ?
I just want it to sit level. I do not want a lift or nothing major.

OK, I looked up the Ford specifications in my Factory Service Manual. Ford lists the variability from side to side as 5/8" for the front and 3/4" at the rear. They measure the height at the same point on the fender lip to the ground. If your rear end is more than 3/4" different from left to right then it is out of tolerance.

Robert

Do they give the conditions that should be observed when making the measurement? i.e. Full tank of fuel? or does it matter?

Robert

Thanks for looking up that information. Now I just have to wait for my left rear to sag about a 1/4" more and I can get the springs replaced under my extended warrantee. :)

Yes, full tank of fuel, same size tires all the way around, level ground.

If you measure with a full tank and then measure again with an empty tank, you can calculate the spring rate since you will know the deflection and load.

I'm not really sure whether this would be useful to anyone though.

Conversely, if you can find a published spring rate, you should be able to predict the deflection with a full tank or empty tank (or anywhere in between). This might be useful to find out if the spring meets spec. If it deflects a lot more than it is supposed to, I would inspect carefully for cracks.

Of course you have to calculate the weight distribution with respect to all 4 wheels (each wheel carries a different percentage of the weight because the center of the fuel tank does not coincide with the center of the vehicle) Also, you have to take into account the deflection of the tires under the same load (the tires have their own spring constant). The tire companies usually publish data on the loaded radius, so you could figure this out.

Has anyone here weighed each wheel separately on a scale to determine the actual weight distribution? If you knew this, then you could pick springs for each corner with exactly the right spring constant so that your truck is perfectly level. Of course, you would need to decide whether you want it to be level with no driver or if you want it to be level when you are driving. Also, do you want to carry passengers and cargo? How much and where are you going to put it? Level with a full tank or half a tank? Level when driving at 70mph (factor in aerodynamics) or just when sitting at the curb?

Ford has already designed a system to try to do this. It is their Air Ride system. Maybe that is what you need if you MUST have a perfectly level truck. :p

If I ask my neighbors I could probably come up with 4 bathroom scales. I'm not using my own though:p

Well, I was actually thinking about a truck scale but the 4 bathroom scale idea sounds pretty amusing.

Be sure to take some pictures:D

Okay , and other ideas on how to level my Ex ?

sorry guys, havn't been able to measure my x for you yet. i just found out i have to have minor back surgery and i'm in a lot of pain. my x is the last thing on my mind right now. i'll post again when i get the results of the sagging. thanks.

Saggy butt

Speaking of saggin, the taperd mono-leaf equpped sports are the worst. Mine flattened out after a month on the shackles. 4 dr leafs are the way 2 go.

Did you measure to see how much just the 4 leaf spring raised the back? Or did you do a shackle change also?

I kind of like the taperleaf springs on mine. I haven't really noticed any sag. My trailer tongue weight is pretty low, so I'm not in any danger of overloading them.

sorry i havn't got back to some of you with this subject. i had back surgury and havn't been doing much of anything lately. i've been off work for awhile and hopped up on pain pills. if you read the post below, you will be caught up on what's goin on....thanks.
