I'm new here, trying to diagnose a problem. Have a '94 Exp XLT auto /w push button 4x4 Hi & Lo. The rear end seems to be slipping. It has 133K on the trans and haven't had any probs until this weekend, drove it 200 miles and now it doesn't want to shift right. Doesn't seem to have power in drive, and bangs/shudders when pulling out from a stop or shifting from drive/reverse or vice-versa. Trans fluid is OK, doesn't seem to be excess play in either front/rear u-joints. Don't know where to start looking. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like your tranny but thats just a guess.

Do you have any other info? Any check engine lights? When was the last time the tranny was serviced?

Oh, and welcome to the board!

I had it in 4wd 3 days ago, front axle isn't turning now so I'm sure it's not in 4wd anymore. Once I'm going either direction forward/reverse seems ok, problems only occur when stopping or changing direction. Wasn't having probs before using 4wd or long trip(200 miles) 2 days ago. Have noticed intermittant brake light comes on(maybe once a week), checked fluids/calipers-all seem ok. Did check rear pumpkin and axle- no excess fluid noticed.

Yeah that sounds tranny related.

It sounds like you may have the same problem that I had. I changed my U-joints and it cleared up. Have you checked them?

Is the transfer case fully engaging 'off' in 2wd?

Did you try driving it in 4wd?

sound like the transfer case might be slippping

we had a 94 explorr eb, your tranny is shot, thats what happend to us, and then it just all went to hell.

Hi.
You can go under the car and take on the drive-shafts and see if there is some freeplay in the U-joints. If not the problem could be the T-case: bearings, chain. If you can access the filler plug on the T-case you can try too see if the oil has a strange smell or color too it.
