Just bought a 2002 Explorer V8. Love it but getting a rear end noise. Starts at 4Ok and is noticeable if take foot off accelerator. Also if I drift in neutral

The front tyres are brand new. Rear 50% worn

Any ideas

You can't have mismatched tires like that if it's 4WD.

definitely do a search for rear end whine.

lots of data on this known problem. some have had their rear end grenade, but i don't think it's all that common.

there are some minor fixes, like adding higher viscosity oil, and major fixes, like rebuilding or replacing the pumpkin. not all repairs have been successful i believe.

mine has done this since new, now at 100K miles and still going. a little annoying, but not fatal in my case. I just turn the radio up.
