Feeling a bit stupid at the moment as can't tell how go about this. My 98 Monty 5.0 AWD the driver side hatch hinge is loose (can see bolt pull away from roof when try open glass) so the hinge at the metal roof flops & window rattles. I can see disaster waiting in the wings.

Question...how does one access the bolt that goes into the roof. I see what looks like a pin on the right side of the hinge where the glass part connects with the roof part. Does that come out somehow? Is & does cover pop off the bolt? Guessing the metal around the bolt is probably worn from the bolt wearing loose. Nothing is broke so just need tighten or??? that hinge connection to the roof. Thanks much for pointers or pointing me to another thread (searched but didn't see details which probably obvious to others).! I have a long drive ahead in 2 days & really would like to get this thing tight (or lots duct tape???).

Hinge does not come apart. What you need to do is, with the entire hatch in the open position, pop loose the plastic upper headliner trim that runs above the top of the hatch opening. You will then see two rubber grommet plugs (one on each side) that you remove. Underneath each is the 10mm nut that needs tightening.

Thank you! Knew it was something obvious...nuts!

You will probably have to read this thread after you check the hinge. The post's about drilling out the hinge stud.

Oops...slight correction. It's the top of the plastic trim panel that covers the interior of the hatch that is loosened for access instead of along the headliner.

Thank you both! I should be able to get this thing securely attached one way or the other. Tomorrow will try tightening first & if necessary am prepared to drill & bolt.

Monty is getting old but has been super dependable. 326k & other than maintenance only the transfer case replaced at 325k.
