Rear hatch locks only with the key

I have a 2001 Explorer XLT with poer everything, and the only way to lock and unlock either the hatch or the hatch glass at the back is by the key. It does not lock using any of the buttons inside, or by using the keyless entry buttons. The back hatch does not even have a lock peg, it has a trim piece over where the peg would extend from the hatch. Any way to make it lock with the vehicle locking mechanism?

Look for a broken wire, burned out motor ( solenoid). Check the wiring where it goesinto the hatch.
