rear hatch problem

Hello all i just bought a 1998 ford explorer v8 awd xlt. got a weird problem with the rear lift gate. the lift glass opens weather its locked or not. all else seems to be ok. previous owner had it apart but as far as i can tell it seems to work the way it should. Im just wondering if the key lock mechanism is messed up where the push button is for the glass. when disconeccting the rod to it, i cant get the latch to lock by hand. Any ideas?

I had to replace the push button latch on mine. Junkyard part is easiest. I used a screwdriver to pry over the latch to hold itself closed until I got the junkyard replacement.
