Hey Everyone, I want to thank you all for your expertise over the years. My 2002 Explorer Eddie Bauer has never run so good.

My current problem is the hinges on my liftgate window. The hinges are NOT broke but as you can see the bottom washer nuts are severely rusted.

I bought the lift supports because the window no longer stays up when I open it.
I also purchased the hinges to replace the originals.

My questions are as follows:
1. How do I take off the round washer nuts WITHOUT breaking the glasd? I am super worried about breaking the glass.

2. Can I just replace the washer nut WITHOUT replacing the entire hinge?

3. If i have to replace the entire hinge do I need to remove the window lift supports?

Thanks for all of your expertise & practical experience. Over the last 23 years, it’s more valuable than you know!🇺🇸

I have replaced both items on mine and no you don't have to remove the lifts to do the hinges. I don't see any reason to replace the hinge unless its warped, putting just the bolt on the glass part on its own should be fine (do one side at a time). There is a plastic washer below the star bolt that is against the glass and I didn't have any issue replacing. I did this on my own but too have more hands to steady the glass is while working on it is a big plus. If you can remove the rust from the bolt to get a secure grip on the star bolt that would be the way to go.

Gfg, thanks for your feedback. I replaced all 4 lift supports & the hatch & window worked great now. Goes all the way up with just a finger.

Any suggestions on removing the rust other than using a small sand wheel & maybe multiple applications of penetrating oil?

The hinges are fine except the washer might be bad as I see a water streak down the glass after a rain or car wash???

Much appreciated!

On the rust use a wire brush either hand held or a mechanical one that attaches to a drill. Since you have the new hinges there is that plastic protector that goes against the glass and you may need to swap the leaky one out or put some adhesive (Shoe Goo) on the backing to keep moisture out. Hopefully the threads arent rusted together, I wouldn't get to aggressive if that bolt is stubborn. Keep in mind when you pop the hinge from the glass the whole thing will be a bit unstable.👍

I have a 1” wire wheel that attaches to my cordless DeWalt drill.

As far as the threads being rusted together I’ll coat the threads with multiple layers of penetrating oil over a week to see how it works?

Like I stated earlier, I won’t push it because they still work fine. If I can break loose the torx bolt to install a new washer, I’ll be set to go.

Ill loose my mind if I shatter the glass on a 23 year old Explorer.

Thank for following up with me!!
