Finally got my old leaky main seal out. Turns out, the bozos who did the job before used the revised Ford seal (intended to be used with a sleeve) but never installed a sleeve. There was a visible gap between the seal and crank.
Anyway, in typical fashion, I installed a new teflon seal without reading the directions. I have it nice and square, about 0.210" past the crank snout.
Haynes lists the depth as "flush with block". Does it really matter how deep the seal is as long as it's square?
