Hey again guys. Currently replacing 4.0 engines in my 01 Ranger and the new rear main seal that I purchased has a sleeve with it. My old rear main seal wasn't leaking but I figured I would change it anyways since the used engine had 138k miles on it. Do I have to use the sleeve for the new seal to work properly? I didn't want to use it unless I had to. It seems like a pain to get on. I just wasn't sure if the new seal was the same diameter or if it was made a bit bigger to compensate for the sleeve.

I guess I'm just gonna suck it up and buy the $100 install tool so I don't have to worry about it.

You shouldn't need the sleeve unless there is a groove worn into the crank by the old seal. If your crank if fine, just use the seal.

Good to hear. There was no groove so I should be good to go. Thanks for saving me $100!
