I had the rear locker installed today, and it sure feels different. What I am feeling is what I call axle rap, it seems like the rear diff wants to drive right out from under me. When I accel or deccel it wants to push and pull, somewhat hard to keep in one lane. It also seems that I am getting a noise every time I shift a gear, like there is play in the drive train somewhere. When I turn corners it seems to unlock, I get no chirping tires. I haven't been off road yet to see how it acts. Is this something I have to get used to or could I have other problems. I didn't have any of these symptoms on the way in this morning. My rig has 410 gears with a 4" lift and 32" tires. The locker is a Power Trax No-Slip.

THK -

I have the same set up that you have but only with a Rancho 2.5".

I had to readjust my driving style, easy around the corner, not to give it gas when I turn, only accelerate hard when it's straight. It takes some getting used to but no big deal. Momentum, momentum, momentum... remember that when turning and you'd be fine. Regarding push/pull/noise/unlock in the corners, that doesn't sound right. Mine exhibits none of those traits. In a corner, when I'm making a sharp turn/U-turn and give it a little gas, the inside tire will chirp but no axle/drivetrain noise. There should be no play at all. You can test it out this weekend by jacking up one of the rear tires and see if it'll turn by itself, it shouldn't.

On the other hand, it could just be the locker breaking in and you won't experience that anymore.

Like Khoa, I have none of the symptoms you describe going straight/trying to keep it in a lane. However, this is your first day. It took a day or two to break mine in. Mine wanted to stay locked at all times and was very clunky the first day, then it settled in and did fine. Remember what he said about momentum going into corners. It will disengage in corners and be totally transparent as long as you stay off the go pedal.

I did notice more backlash and slop in mine after installing it. I can roll the vehicle a couple inches back and forth while in park. I hear no noise while shifting though. Wait a day or two for yours to break in before getting worried about it.

Break in

Ill say what everyone else said, It needs to have its break in period before you can really determine what is normal. The manual has a break in sequence if I remember correctly.

There should be a bit more back lash in the drive train. Also the tip from Khoa was a good one- use power on the straight, not around the corners- the locker ( any locker, or LS to some extent) will want to push the vehicle straight.

If you drive on roads that have a lot of camber you will feel it the axle will want to walk down one side of the a"hill" or the other.

Also check your tire pressure- both sides need to be the same. I also added a couple of pounds to the inflation pressure that I run to stiffen up the tire as it is "dragged" around the corners.

Tip: rotate tires more frequently.
