My 99' explorer has 73k on it and as far as I know it has the original pads/rotors on the back. I bought it with 43k a year ago so I'm not quite sure. Anyways, I went to take the pads off earlier this week, no problem. Got down to the rotors and it was virtually impossible to remove them. I played with the self adjuster behind the rotor and was not successful. Is there a secret to this or are they rusted on there? Should I try and pry them off?

they are most deff. rusted on, about a week ago i had to replace both my emergency breaks, an they are located inside of the rotors, so what ya need to do is get a 6" pulley puller. take your pulley puller and put the arms horizontally across from each other and tighten down till its snug. then take a rubber mallet an your pb blaster and just hit the lugs with the pb blaster and then just beat on the very end of the pulley puller left to right, not up and down. it will eventually break it loose, and u will need to beat on it hard, i didn't damage mine at all...i'll find my pic and the thread i made...good luck

I smacked the **** out of mine, not with a rubber mallet, but a bfh. Don't hit the braking surface at all. Tried some heat too, but it was eventually a puller, smacking it hard, then tightening the puller keep smacking and tightening and it should break it free.

Firstly, make sure the parking brake is off. Second, if you are replacing the rotors use a regular framing hammer. Hitting the hub with a metal hammer was enough to knock them loose in no time for me. I beat it with a rubber mallot for 20 minutes and they wouldn't budge.

If you are not replacing the rotors, just be more careful with the hammer and keep the blows near the hub. Some PB Blaster doesn't hurt either.

Thanks guys....i'll go to murrays tomorrow and buy a puller pulley and see what happens. I'll let you know how it turned out!!
