I just inherited my son's 2002 Explorer Sport ... and his neglect of it! The rear glass panel of the hatch does not lock. To the extent I could explore in sub-freezing temperature, I determined that the U-shaped hook on the glass and the latching mechanism on the door are misaligned. Since the U doesn't move on the glass, I unbolted the door latch and found I had about 1/2" play back-to-front but almost no side-to-side. The side-to-side is the problem ... the latching mechanism aligns with one leg of the U, rather than anywhere near dead center. Also, when I move the locking mechanism as far back as I can (toward the rear of the truck), it seems to prevent the key lock from releasing. I can't see how this can all be so misaligned unless the glass panel has moved ... is that possible? I'm no auto mechanic, but I am extremely handy about general household repairs ... Is this something I should even attempt, or simply go to FORD and get it fixed?

Voila ... it wasn't the latch mechanism; it was the window itself. It is so loose that I can move it about 2" left to right. When it gets a bit warmer here, I'll make the adjustments.
