Looking up lift supports for my rear hatch glass, none are in stock in town. Then I see that every year of the 3rd gen supposedly has a different part number.

With 02/03 being listed as 17 11/16” long and
04/05 being 18 5/8” long. But every year has a different part number.

This seems crazy? Anyone know the difference?

I ordered STABILUS 4B8028XI my 2004 Mounty and it fits and works fine.
Except to confuse us, I'm sure minor differences don't matter here.

I don't know if it's like this on the Explorer, but for my van they have different part numbers for models with or without a rear wiper motor. I guess the extra weight of the motor has a heavy duty shock while the one without the motor is a little weaker.

There was a TSB from ford and they replace my 02 limited rear door struts on their dime, (quite some time back) you might see if yours was ever serviced or could be...
