Rearend whining, now clunking-need a new one

Hello,

This has probably been discussed before, but I need to know where I can get a new rearend-cheap.

This is for a friend who goes to mexico with a food ministry, and helps orphanages there, and also here in the US.

They have an 02 Ford Explorer 4x4, that has been whining in the rearend for some time. I told them NOT to take it to Mexico, but I get a call today, saying they were about to hit the freeway when it started making the telltale thumping/clunking.

I have checked some local boneyards, but all the axles there are live, and this particular rearend is an IRS. Looking at the tag, it's a locking 3.73 gear rearend.

Ebay doesn't have too much, either, one rebuilt for $1,100, which is astronomical, and only marginally better than the $1,300 the dealer wants for it.

If the boneyards had one it'd be $150.

So my question is does anyone have any hookups for this? This a charity case and I won't be making any money on it. These are good people and are feeding me right now through the church, because we are all hitting some hard times.

The one on ebay for 1,100 is probably mine. That's a 3.73 limited slip. What ratio do you need? If you'll settle for an open diff. we'll play let's make a deal. Tell me what you think is fair for a remanufactured rear diff?
