My auto trans is slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear. I checked the level and it was not low.

I replaced the fluid and filter last night but it is still slipping.

I don;t know too much about trannys but it sounds like a band is slipping and I need a rebuid. How much of a rebuild do I need? How much can I expect it to cost?

I have a 96 EB 4-dr 4x4 Explorer with 57K miles.

Take it to a reputable tranny repair shop before any serious damamge is done. 57K miles seems rather low for a full rebuild.

I called a place that seems on the up and up. They will hook it up to a computer and test it.
He says that it could be that the 3rd gear clutch could be worn out. Or maybe a shift solenoid.

57K is low for problems but I do live in a high traffic area with 22 traffic lights between work and home in an 8 mile stretch (and they have the nerve to call it an expressway!). So I am constantly using the passing gear to make it through those yellow lights. It is not the best commuter car.

Sounds like it could be the vaccum modulator on the transmission. You can check it by pulling the rubber line off at the modulater and if there is transmission fluid there that is most likely your proble. I just went through the same problem.
