I have a 2003 Ford Explorer V6, 4X4 with 86,000 miles. I noticed high rpms when shifting into 2nd gear. Then the overdrive light turned on (overdrive turned off). I continued to drive until I reached home. By then the check transmission light came on and I got a message saying that the trans was overheating. I took the vehicle to a mechanic. He ran diagnostics and said that the solenoid needed to be replaced which he did. Now I'm hearing that the band for 2nd gear needs to be replaced. I'm wondering if I should let him rebuild the transmission and check all components or if it's better to buy a complete unit new or used and have it installed. What experience has been better and more reliable????

early failure

86,000 miles seems rather early to need a rebuild. Which transmission do you have?
I would not pay a shop for a rebuild without receiving a decent warranty. I had my Tahoe transmission rebuilt by a national chain and paid extra for any heavy duty parts available. I only got a 90 day warranty and the transmission needed another rebuild in two years. I then got it and my Jeep transmission rebuilt by a local shop with an excellent reputation. I received a two year warranty as long as I get it serviced once each year.
