I've removed and installed my transmission my self once, it was a ***** but it was doable. i used ratchet straps to lower and lift the transmission into place. I did get someone to help me get the bell housing lined up with the motor. You dont need any special tools to drop the trans, just regular hand tools. There is a special tool you can get to remove the clutch hydralic line but you can use 2 screw drivers. Also get yourself a chiltons manual if you don't already have one. Goodluck with it.

that sux dude....did you have any warning? also, how many miels were on taht tranny?

doug, thank you for the info, i should have been more specific but i'm goin to actually try to rebuild this one myslef, i've never tore into a transmission b4 so dunno what to expect.... but yeah you are right dropping it and putting it up is a ***** alone, there is barelyyyyy enough room up there, lol

udmsvt, yeah there was some bad sounds comin form down there for a lil bit, but when i put it in it had like 80 or 90,000 on it already soo... go figure

Goodluck with rebuilding it yourself, you are going to need special tools to do that, at the very least you're going to need a press to remove and install the bearings, I'm sure you'll need a verneer and micrometer among other things, I'm pretty sure there are some other specialized tools you need to properly rebuild the transmission. Assuming you can get it all apart and put back together it would really suck to have to pull it all back apart and redo it all because you forgot something.

well i got it apart today....
synchro's are eh....
gears fine....
output shaft was very loose wiggles a lot!!....
lots of metal shavings...
bearing for output shaft was shot...
slave cylinder is eff'd....
and for soem reason my driveshaft bolts were kinda loose:eek:
flywheel wasn't pretty, but will get resurfaced....
pressure plate is fine...

the rebuild kit is 241.00 and that does not come wiht the output shaft, so that sux... i still need to get a price on that and the bearing
also still need a price on the slave cylinder....
so all that will have to wait till friday...

what all did you need to get it apart? let me know if you need any internal parts i have a torn down 5spd trans sitting in my basement. The bearings should be relatively cheap but i'm guessing the output shaft is gonna run you around 3-400 bucks i'm guessing.

didnt really need any special tools or anything but the chiltons helped more than anything!! what kind of 5 spd do you have? mine is an m50d....

the transmission in my garage is out of a 97 explorer and is an m5od, btw i dont have the output shaft, the transmission was torn down after i blew the output shaft in my transmission. :)

are the insides good or bad or you keeping them? like maybe the output shaft or the first brass synchro on the front of the trans

I'll take a look and see if the synchros i have are any good. it might be worth it to just buy new ones depending on how much they cost.

I posted a M5OD manual in this thread Thought it might help. Good luck and let us know how it goes. I thought about rebuilding mine, but I'm not going to unless I have too. I think it could use a new slave though, I little hard getting in first sometimes.

any pics?
