I know the 4.0L OHV is always kinda noisy in the valvetrain, it has run enough to warm up and the lifts/rockers are still making noise. How long does it take for them to quiet down to the normal sound? I was thinking 2-3 min but maybe it will take more than that?

When we rebuilt our 4.0 ('92) It took < 5 minutes for the valve train to quiet down. That was with the lifters soaking in oil overnight (no idea if that even helped)..

Is it running right other than the noise?

Many moons ago when I replaced the heads on the X I ended up with 1 push rod not seated correctly. It started and idled, but it just didn't run right. It was very noisy on 1 side. I pulled the valve covers off from the bad side, loosened the rocker arm assembly and re-jiggered the push rods and tightened down the rock arm assembly and then all was fine..

May have to try that. It is on the drivers side luckily! :) Easy side. But yes it runs great really strong other than sounds like either a single lifter or rocker making noise. Bran new lifters, push rods, and used but almost new rockers.

Well going to call the machine shop in a minute and send them a video clip of what it sounds like and see what they say. It has a full warranty so they shouldn't have a problem taking care of it. Only thing is we drove 300 miles to the shop so little out of the way but no big deal.

Said was surprised to made any noise really they checked the pre-load of all the lifters and things and they where are really good. So we are going to put 30-40 miles on it and see what it is doing after that. If we need to they will buy a new rocker bar for the drivers side of the engine.

Just FYI we put new rocker arms on it but right when we took off the valve cover we knew that wasn't going to fix it. The Intake on cyl #5 was wicked floppy which would be why it was so loud. The Brand New lifters, we bought to make sure there wasn't a problem, the one on the intake on cyl 5 is flat. It is in its full compressed state and wont return. so there is about a 1/4" gap where you can rock the rocker arm back and forth. So now to either trailer it up to the machine shop (bad part not their fault, but is under warranty) to have them do it or see if they will give back a little money to have us put the lifter in since the head has to come off to do them. Blah, My brother who bought the engine can't seam to get a break even when he buys a whole new engine.

Look at this picture...

If the engine is under warranty then I would have them repair it even though it is a major pita to trailer it back to the shop...But I was looking at the build I did on my Explorer this spring and I think #5 intake would clear the head...

Isn't the valve arrangement IE-IE-IE on the drivers side which is where #5 is? It would still mean pulling the intake, rockers, pushrods and finally the dead lifter but it would be easier than all of that plus yanking the head too...

Either way it sucks to have to go back into an engine to fix a failed component...Good luck to you man...
