Rebuilt Engine
Hey:
I put in a Jasper rebuilt engine on my 93 explorer about a year ago. It has been a very good engine. My lesson learned was that the "good deal" I got on the explorer ended up being a higher cost than typical for such an old vehicle. However, I have a nationwide 3 year, 75,000 mile warranty...parts and labor...which was the best available at the time.
When it comes to actual costs, I find that most people on various forums brag about how little they spent, so it is hard to find the real costs when they are covered up by braggadoccio. However, the engine cost me just under 3K and my mechanic helped himself to about 1K to put it in. At the time, Ford wanted close to 4K !!! (I didn't bother to ask how much the dealership would have charged to put it in.) This would have had a 3 year, 50 K mile warranty, parts only, as I recall. Advance Auto offered a Recon (Recon is a brand name) engine for less than 2500, with a 15 month, unlimited mileage parts, and 6 month, ulimited mileage labor. The local junk yard had an engine from a 94 with 195K miles on it, and they wanted 900, and offered, incredibly I thought, a 30 day warranty.
Mechanic had nothing but praise for the Jasper engine. All the gaskets were included, and all miscellaneous parts were correct for the engine. (That is, all the gaskets, etc. fit. Apparently this does not happen all the time) They reused my existing valve covers, injectors and rail, oil pan, etc. There is some question about the oil pan which will be cleared up with the submission of the actual engine code.
The new engine gave me 2 mpg right out of the box. That was how bad the original one was. If you want, you can go to Summit Racing and places like that to get a "Performance" engine. These cost a fair amount...6K to around 12K, depending on the number of goodies you want.
Hope this is helpful.
