Hi there,

I have a 1999 Explorer with a 5 speed automatic coupled to the 4.0 SOHC that's been rebuild approx. 3 years ago (trans has less that 15,000 miles since the rebuild, with moderate driving & no off-roading whatsoever).

Ever since the rebuild, I noticed that the trans would have problems shifting, usually from 1st to 2nd speed when it was cold outside (as in non-summer temperatures). This problem would occur very seldom though and I chose to ignore it, thinking that maybe it needed time to work itself in & that it'd go away with time. It was almost gone last year, actually (2nd year after the rebuild - I only experienced it once, even when it was cold as hell outside).

Well, today was the first noticeably colder day around here, with the morning temperatures being below the freezing point. Once I took off, the tranny started slipping almost every time I'd accelerate on the boulevards, the RPMs would jump up to 3,000 RMP before the shifting would occur. This was not an isolated slippage and would occur about half the time at least. When I got home after work, I stopped and checked fluid level - it seemed a bit low. Went to the parts store, got some Mercon V compatible fluid and added half the bottle, just in case I'd overfill it. Level seemed fine after, but on the way back home I still experienced some slippage, even at low speeds. The transmission was at operating temperature, or at least close to it.

Now... this damn thing cost me $2500 to rebuild from A to Z just three years ago, complete rebuild, new solenoids, new fluid, etc... if this is the case again, I will be p*ssed beyond any words. I don't even know what I'm gonna do at that point...

Is there something simple I could try before I bring the truck to the shop again? Maybe drive it around some more till the added fluid settles? I don't have time to play around with it much, plus it's getting very cold outside this time of year. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!
