hello and thank you for you upcoming assistance/advice!

97 Explorer V8. My Dad traded w me and said he had the transmission rebuilt approx. 6 months ago.

Now, it is slipping whenever I start out from a complete stop. Also slips really bad when i try to punch it (like when passing). I stopped punching it for fear of further damage? Also VERY weak going up hills.

my OD isn't flashing.
I do keep checking the fluid and it seems to go somewhere? Not leaking under it when I check before/after I drive it. No check engine light either.

I am not an expert. I can change brakes, plugs, etc. I am in the Army and have access to a shop on post where the techs can assist when I seem lost.

So, please suggest away....

Again, I greatly appreciate your help. I really can't afford to go to Ford for this. Trying to save money using shop on post.

Anyone here near Ft. Benning, GA? i am from MD, but here for a month...

I thinik a great first place to start is to have a pressure gauge put on your transmission (which is a 4r70w by the way). Slippage can often be related to inadequate pressures to lock up clutches or bands. Those pressures can be low for various reasons, but first let's see if that is the Q.

Maybe I should have asked... how is the fluid? color? Smell? Miles on it? (I assume fairly new but need to know color and smell anyway).

Anyway get the pressures checked. It might be something simple....

The post auto shop doesn't deal w/ trans. so they couldn't help me check the pressure... Could a local shop do that at my request?

I cheked the fluid. Yes, it's darker than what I put in. It also smells different. I would guess engine oil??? Could that be?

The trans fluid should only be 8 months old at most since it was rebuilt around that time.

Does it smell burned? Call around to shops and ask them if they could check the pressure in a 4r70w and how much it would cost to do so. I would also try and be there reading the gauge along with them if they did it and just post the numbers here. Is it an option to bring the truck back to the shop that rebuilt the transmission for your dad? There should be some kind of warranty on it.

No, not a burned smell. But, I just added fluid again yesterday. I will smell again tonight/tomorrow...

Unfortuanately I am in Georgia. he had it done in pennsylvania.... It was a local shop.

I will definitely call around and get the pressure checked.
thanks guys!
