a specific and a general question... i have a 2002 ex that is eligible for the rear hatch recall. i haven't had a problem with the hatch yet (barely use it), but the metal bolts in the glass are rusted. i was wondering if the recall would replace these rusty bolts, which are kind of an eyesore on an otherwise nice-looking truck.

the general question is, do the ford service centers/dealers tend to tack on cost to a recall? i.e., find things that might not really be a problem in order to recover some of the expense for the work they've done? maybe it's just me being paranoid, but the thought had crossed my mind. thanks.

Recall repair is free, dealers could care less, is not a dime out of there pockets

Yea..I dont think they are allowed to charge on recalls.

thanks for the responses. does anyone who had this recall done know if they replace the visible bolts in the hatch? the fact that mine are rusting and have stained the glass somewhat is really the main reason i'd be getting this done (and to prevent any future problem of course).

thanks again.

Wait, has ford finally recalled the rear hatches on the 3rd gens? If so that would rock.

My 2002 Explorer was recalled for the rear window problem soon after I bought it new in 2002. The bolts were not part of the repair but should not cost that much to replace while you have it at the dealer.

Recall is 04S20 which came out in 2004. It covers model year 2002 and early 2003 vehicles only.

Too bad its not the one that really matters...
I never noticed anything wrong with my rear hatch...

What they need to recall is that damn panel that cracks on the back of the 3rd Gens.

It doesn't matter how many different people previously owned a certain vehicle at the time of a Manufacturer recall. The Manufacturer will mail you, the current owner out a recall repair notice for you specific vehicle, describing the recalled part or parts and will tell you what date you can start calling your local dealership and schedule the repair for the recalled part. "You" pay nothing for this repair. The dealership that does your repair will get paid from the manufacturer for their service repair time and parts used.
