I'm just getting all the facts together before I put 31's on my 92 xlt (auto) and regear it to 4.10 . The power in my '92 stinks now with 235x75's so I don't want to imagine what it will be like after.
However, i've heard from alot of people that after 100,000km the trannies on auto Explorers like to crap out and be replaced. I'm at 95,000km now and the tranny doesn't seem to have any problems. My question is: if I re-gear it and the tranny gives out in a couple of years, are the gears replaceable in the new tranny i'd have to intstall or is it just safer to buy a whole new transmission now with the 4.10 gears already installed right now?

Epitaph,

I think you are a little confused. The regearing that is used when the tire size changes is in the axles not the transmission. Changing the axle gears will have no bearing on the status of your transmission. You can change the axle gears (commonly refered to as "gears")now and when your trans needs to be rebuilt you can do that too, the systems are different.

With 31" tires and 4.11 gears it looks to me like it would be the same as stock 235's with 3.73 gears.

I dont know of anyone who makes lower gears for Auto transmission, thats a good Idea though.

Hope that helps you out.

Ford Motorsports sell a lower wide ratio gear set for the tranny.

If anything the gear change will help the tranny. Larger tires need more torque to get them rolling. By changing the ratio in the rearends you are increasing the torque to the wheels and letting the tranny work like normal.

Epitaph, The transmissions typically start giving you trouble at around 100,000 miles so that would give you until 160,000km.
My transmission went at 170,000km but part of that was my fault. I think that it is a good idea to have a check up done on your transmission. It will allow the transmission shop to make any necessary adjustments and to find any problems that are sneaking up on you. Prevention is the key with the A4LD transmission. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

By the way, Pendarus, the wide ratio gearset available from Ford is for the AOD transmission. Last I heard, there was no wide ratio gearset available for the A4LD.
