Reliablity of 3rd gen Explorers? (02-05) questionable?

My 2005 is the first Explorer I have ever owned. It now has 90k, and I bought her with 49k a year ago. Trans solenoid was replaced, both front hub bearings. Beyond that, I have kept her clean, regular oil changes, and just put on a new set of tires. I do a lot of driving (40k in 12 months). Highway, city, light off road, lots of driving for hours in heavy snow storms with the Auto 4x4 switching on and off. Truck has been flawless with the exception of the previous issues. I normally drive an Audi, and needed something I didnt mind getting dirty and scratched up while also racking on the miles. I must say, that I am very impressed with the truck, and I would recommend it without question.

If anyone wants to complain about vehicle issues, go spend 55K+ on and Audi, and enjoy your MONTHLY loaner from your local dealership. ;)

my father was a HUGE Audi connoseur back in the day.

He had clutch issues constantly, the older audi's (90's) had issues with the door locks, he could NEVER get fixed (pressurized or something as he explaiend them not electric) He could't lock his doors. He also told me hundreds of other things that went wrong.

One was a recall on the pedals, which raped him out of 80% of his investment in that car, he got RAPED on a trade-in, cause nobody wanted them, so he opted NEVER to buy another audi EVER again.

I have an 03 XLT with 151k on it. Overall not a terrible SUV but it does have a maintenance heavy personality. So far I have had to deal with:

Front wheel bearings roughly every 65k

Rear wheel bearings at 120k

Door ajar light that will not go out, even though all doors and hatch cause a beep when opened which means that the all the door switches are working.

Broken rear spring (drivers side) at 47k

Noisy rear diff (makes a whining sound at highway speeds) started at ~60k

1 alternator at 77k

defective cats at 94k (tried O2 sensors first)

With all that said it does start and run OK even at -20F. I do maintain it quite well. I use Amsoil throughout and make sure that all maintenance cycles are strictly adhered to. If Ford could fix these issues they would have an awesome SUV.

I am not sure that I would get another X though, Given that I maintain it quite well, and mainly drive it on easy highway miles, I am worried that the overall quality is lacking in some areas. It does seem that the issues that I have experienced are quite common throughout the 3rd and 4th gen models.

As I look at this list of issues it seems that these items should be relatively easy for Ford to resolve through better component and reliability engineering.

Well, while I am the creator of this thread and I have heard of several issues.. what you've mentioned doesn't seem too bad for a 160k vehicle... I'd be more than happy with that.. if you've had a 160k vehicle have less problems through its life then all you were was lucky bro.

Every vehicle I've owned with simialr mileage has had MUCH worse problems. I can live with all that! :D

ive already commented on this thread, but why not again lol...

i have now put 5,000 miles on my X since i bought it, and i still feel the same way about my X now, as the day i got it... i love this truck !! its one of the best investments ive made in my so far " young life " lol... everything is up to par, and i intend on keeping it that way... since im nuts about my upkeep lol...

its all about having " love " for your vehicle... this is might be me being paranoid idk, but when i get my oil changed, i go through a personal list...

oil change / oil filter / tire rotation + air pressure / air filter / fuel injector cleaner...

i also change my ( spark plugs / ignition wires ) every 12,000 miles... just got every thing i listed done 3 days ago...

i may be nuts... your opinion, but my X runs like a champ lol !!!

Many people occupy the "you can never do enough preventative maintenance" it sure seems to work for them! :D Glad you enjoy your X!

Not bad for a 160k AMERICAN vehicle, perhaps.

I bought a brand new Honda CR-V for my wife back in 1998. Maintained it normally, it went through brakes, tires, oil, fluids. Sold it 9 years later with 130,000 miles on it. Never had anything on it break. No bearings to replace, no differentials, no transmissions, no leaks, no squeaks, nothing. And...I bought it for $20,000 - 9 years later, sold it for $8,000, with 130,000 miles on it! Try that with a Ford!

So it's taken a bit of getting used to, this continuous-maintenance-things-breaking routine with both of my Explorers - but I do love my truck.

you got lucky bro, got several friends loyal to honda and I can tell you compared to your problems so far with your x, they've had WAY more. I got a buddy with cvr (1999 it hink, maybe 2000) and he's had to replace his head gaskets, his fuel pump, alternator (3x) and he's had all sorts of variosu suspension problems. he told me he will never buy another honda ever again because of how overrated they are.

Also, hondas are UGLY. I can't drive a vehicle that looks like it has down syndrome...

Another thing on the American Car Comment.. while I may agree that American Cars can overall be considered slightly more maintenence, let me also point out that foreign cars haven't been out as long. (in america). People based their opinions and bouht these vehicles, hoping they were higher quality. The self-satisfaction comesa in to play here. A honda driver with your explorer's situation would dismiss that as normal wear, wheras if you bought a ford (and everyone rips of fords for sucking) you might say ahh, ford.. ford sucks .. this is what i get for driving a ford...

A lot of it is psychological. I consider ford the highest quality of the American makes, regardless of the stereotype. I have owned 50 vehicles int he last 7 years (flipping cars) and I can tell you all of my fords have been excellent cars. My 1998 taurus, both 1992 f150s, 1993 f150, 1979 f150, 1992 ranger, 1995 explorer, 2003 explorer (so far) and I know im forgetting some, but they've all been EXCELLENT cars. Best of all, all the f150's and rangers had 180-220k miles, and had ZERO problems while I owned them 3-8 months. (I drive the cars for a few months b4 selling them typically, especially fords b/c I like them).

The only GM car of any quality I've ever owned was a 1992 bonneville. At 298k miles, it had the original motor and trans. It ran pretty good considering, and it was a well-built machine. ALL GM LEAK OIL PROFUSELY!!! I don't why that is, but my 1993 lumina, 1999 cadillac deville, and a bunch of others were total turds. The lumina had 120k miles on it, and had 2 bad valves. The deville had 120k miles on it, and a cracked head (not blown head gasket, but cracked head) None of these vehicles were driven hard, I had all the maintence records and they were both owned by elderly people who passed.

As for dodge, I own an 06 charger.. already had a tranny leak, my brakes suck, and the tie rods are already screwed up.. Sure it's a customized car but that's still rediculus for 20k miles. My 2000 Durango was a TURD. I spent more money on that durango in the 9 months I had it than I did on my 1995 explorer (200k) in 5 years! PIECE OF CRAP.

I can only base my info on my past experiences (which is human) but all of my GM friends who are die hard gm fans admit they are overrated and are sick of their driveways looking like oil spills.

I think a lot of problems - but not all - can be related to maintenance.

That said, I've owned 15 cars over the past 23 years, and three motorcycles (two Hondas, one Suzuki).

They are: 82 Datsun, 85 Honda, 79 Ford, 82 Datsun, 89 Subaru, 91 Toyota, 91 Subaru, 89 Honda, 89 Toyota, 98 Honda, 93 Subaru, 03 Honda, 01 Buick, 94 Ford, 03 Ford

Of the 11 Japanese cars, I had two major failures: the 91 Subaru had its (automatic) transmission fail, and the 03 Honda, which I bought new, had a bad transmission that was replaced a month after I got it - with no problems after that.

Of the 3 American cars, the first Ford died a thankful flaming death on the side of the hightway, when the massive oil leak that masqueraded as an engine finally ignited. In the one year I owned it, it had a timing chain fail, clutch fail, head gasket failure, and I'm sure a few other things I now forget about.

The 94 Ford (Explorer) had lots of problems - I was almost continuously fixing it. Everything from radius arm bushings to the pitman arm, wheel bearings, failed locking hubs, failed fuel tank sender, failed air conditioning lines, failed brake lines, and much more.

My 03 Explorer has had failed wheel bearings, electrical problems, a seized caliper, and broken vacuum line. Hopefully that will be all for some time!

My wife now drives an 01 Buick, which has had transmission problems, suspension problems, and electrical problems.

I'm sorry, but the reliability of my Japanese cars absolutely blows away every American car I've owned.

For an American car I agree. I have however had 2 Toyota's including a Tundra up to similar miles with 1/4 the problems. Overall it seems that Ford is getting within spitting distance of making a vehicle on par with the foreign manufactures.

Im going on 176,000 miles on my 02 Mountaineer AWD V8 right now! I needed to replace all 4 wheel bearings 2 times, and a little bit of rear and and tranny repairs, but for this many miles, the truck runs and looks like its in show room condition!

Ford makes the best trucks I believe, they have done there job for me! I love em

Try that with a Ford!

I've done it many times, in multiple Ford vehicles. You can keep your Honda.

I have to comment again on this one! I work in the parts buisness and with garages every day for the last 9 years and have seen every possible problem with cars today. My 02 has had a ton of problems! so have many other 02 and 03's if you can see all the ford tsb's(fords tech service bullitins)you will find out how many problems the 02's have. It takes alot to perfect all of the parts. That is why I said I will never but a re-design or a 1st year model again. Nothing against ford or any other maker cause they all have problems! I do all my maint myself and on time. But mine has had alot of problems! I have a 98 f-150 150k and traded my 93 ranger with 270K for the f-150. Ford by far makes the best trucks period and I think some of the most reliable! I just got a bad one and it wont stop me from buying another!

I give my 02 mount good functional markes but it it has big quality problems
Mine has less then 60k miles on it and it has had new trany, transfer case, front wheel hubs and borken rear spings both sides. Too me that is unacceptable and has left me with a bad feeling about Ford.

check out any company's tsb, you'll see that all car makes have problems. Honda especially is headed down hill, they started making crappier cars because they had made such a "good name" for themselves. The 06 and newer cars have had more issues than ford.

Infact, for 08, do you know which car company had the "least issues per mile driven" overall? Nope, not toyota, not nissan, not honda, not hyundai (i cant believe that came out of my mouth) but it was FORD.

Go figure.

Yes, I agree ford IS improving. There were times when ford was less than good, but they're getting MUCH better!

bump, more input from other 3rd gen drivers!

I have almost 100K on our 04 we bought new. It has had some early problems all fixed under warranty, the rear ends are a headache and cant blame that on anything but taking a proven rear end and giving it a new bad design. The rest is a wear/maint issue. Bearings wear out. Fact.

The grass is always greener on some other side when your having problems, but the fact is all manufacturers have cut corners in todays economy. Parts are made out of the cheaper material vs better material. Buy what you like and can live with and ignore the bad press. :us::us: Me, I couldn't look at myself in the mirror if I drove a honda:us: As mentioned above its the best selling SUV, more on the road than any other, so more problems to read about. Most people only come on forums when they have problems. I use the info as "things to watch for" but not things to worry about.

Yeah alot of good points!

My buddy owned like 5 f-150's for work trucks, and NEVER had a single problem....and he drove them REALLY HARD too....like NASCAR hard, lol.

Well long story short, he lost control of his f-150 one night on a back road doin like 60mph(deer in the road), and it was raining out.
He swerved off the road, the truck did like a 180 spin MID AIR RIGHT INTO A TREE, then the truck bounced off the tree and rolled down a hill and did like 2 or 3 flips, and landed on the wheels!

He got out of the truck, flipped the Fuel Cut-off switch back On, got in the truck, and DROVE right out of a ditch, thru the woods and got back on the main road! :D:us:

Cops showed up, told him not to have so many beers next time and sent him home, lol.

He ended up Bending the frame beyond repair, cracked like every single window on the truck, there was a HUGE tree dent on the side of the truck, and ANOTHER dent on the back Roof/Cab.......i dont even wanna KNOW how the hell a tree hit there!
Truck looked like someone rolled it off a cliff!

But it still drove perfectly fine!

sounds like it's pretty average for maintenance and stuff

my '03 has been great but it's only got 130K km on it

little hum from the tranny/transfer case

front tires grab a little b/c of the all wheel drive

overall kicks ass!!!

I bought my 04 XLT with 300 miles on the odometer and now have a hair over 85K. The first 84,700 were completely flawless and troublefree. The last 300 have been a bear at every turn. New battery, new alternator and just this evening had to get it towed off the side of the highway for a yet unknown stalling problem at 75mph.

I love the truck, it's never NOT gone somewhere I wanted to go and I use the 4WD function quite frequently to cross creeks and get around muddy fields. It's big enough to carry anything I need and powerful enough to do my very rare towing.
