Not bad for a 160k AMERICAN vehicle, perhaps.
I bought a brand new Honda CR-V for my wife back in 1998. Maintained it normally, it went through brakes, tires, oil, fluids. Sold it 9 years later with 130,000 miles on it. Never had anything on it break. No bearings to replace, no differentials, no transmissions, no leaks, no squeaks, nothing. And...I bought it for $20,000 - 9 years later, sold it for $8,000, with 130,000 miles on it! Try that with a Ford!
So it's taken a bit of getting used to, this continuous-maintenance-things-breaking routine with both of my Explorers - but I do love my truck.
you got lucky bro, got several friends loyal to honda and I can tell you compared to your problems so far with your x, they've had WAY more. I got a buddy with cvr (1999 it hink, maybe 2000) and he's had to replace his head gaskets, his fuel pump, alternator (3x) and he's had all sorts of variosu suspension problems. he told me he will never buy another honda ever again because of how overrated they are.
Also, hondas are UGLY. I can't drive a vehicle that looks like it has down syndrome...
Another thing on the American Car Comment.. while I may agree that American Cars can overall be considered slightly more maintenence, let me also point out that foreign cars haven't been out as long. (in america). People based their opinions and bouht these vehicles, hoping they were higher quality. The self-satisfaction comesa in to play here. A honda driver with your explorer's situation would dismiss that as normal wear, wheras if you bought a ford (and everyone rips of fords for sucking) you might say ahh, ford.. ford sucks .. this is what i get for driving a ford...
A lot of it is psychological. I consider ford the highest quality of the American makes, regardless of the stereotype. I have owned 50 vehicles int he last 7 years (flipping cars) and I can tell you all of my fords have been excellent cars. My 1998 taurus, both 1992 f150s, 1993 f150, 1979 f150, 1992 ranger, 1995 explorer, 2003 explorer (so far) and I know im forgetting some, but they've all been EXCELLENT cars. Best of all, all the f150's and rangers had 180-220k miles, and had ZERO problems while I owned them 3-8 months. (I drive the cars for a few months b4 selling them typically, especially fords b/c I like them).
The only GM car of any quality I've ever owned was a 1992 bonneville. At 298k miles, it had the original motor and trans. It ran pretty good considering, and it was a well-built machine. ALL GM LEAK OIL PROFUSELY!!! I don't why that is, but my 1993 lumina, 1999 cadillac deville, and a bunch of others were total turds. The lumina had 120k miles on it, and had 2 bad valves. The deville had 120k miles on it, and a cracked head (not blown head gasket, but cracked head) None of these vehicles were driven hard, I had all the maintence records and they were both owned by elderly people who passed.
As for dodge, I own an 06 charger.. already had a tranny leak, my brakes suck, and the tie rods are already screwed up.. Sure it's a customized car but that's still rediculus for 20k miles. My 2000 Durango was a TURD. I spent more money on that durango in the 9 months I had it than I did on my 1995 explorer (200k) in 5 years! PIECE OF CRAP.
I can only base my info on my past experiences (which is human) but all of my GM friends who are die hard gm fans admit they are overrated and are sick of their driveways looking like oil spills.
