Is there a part, like a modem(?), that can be purchased to add sync connect to the 2017 explorers? I had a 2015 Cherokee that I could start my vehicle with my phone and I traded it in yesterday for the '17 Explorer that I'm guessing doesn't have this option.

I learned about the Ford SmartLink from lurking here. SmartLink for 2017 Explorer
I bought my SmartLink from Fairway Ford because my local dealer said they couldn't get it. Ford Pass/SmartLink Start from your vehicle from your phone! - (VHL3Z-14F642-A) | Fairway Ford Parts Nate from Fairway activated the account and sent step by step programming instructions for my local dealer. My dealer charged me $129 for programming.

I also came from a 2015 Cherokee. The SmartLink has more functionality than the Jeep app did. I know Jeep just added the ability to remote start via the Amazon Echo, you cant do that with the SmartLink yet.

My 17 explorer came with the Ford custom accessories remote start system. Allows me to start/stop, lock/unlock, and set off the alarm on my explorer. Works pretty well. Still running off a trial though that expires in September. Not sure if I'll renew it though. Also curious about this smart link. Not sure I like the idea of it being plugged into the OBD port all the time. Is it visible? The only feature that I wish my system had was the ability to see if the vehicle is actually locked or unlocked, and manually adjust climate settings. But I guess it's not a huge deal since the car automatically sets the correct climate based on outside temperature.

jhu8, You do not have the ability to see if the car is locked or unlocked but you can lock and unlock it. There aren't any climate control settings in the app. If you leave it plugged directly in to the ODBII port it does stick out a little. There's a green LED on it that blinks every few seconds. I bought an OBDII extension cable on Amazon and stuffed it up under the dash.

Is the monthly $16.99?

2 years of service are included. I believe it’s $17 per month after that, but I couldn’t find anything about the monthly fee on the SmartLink site. They include up to 1GB of hotspot data during the first month. I checked with Verizon and if I wanted to add the hotspot feature to my existing account it would cost me an additional $20 per month.

Looks like they have stopped selling this. Any information on why or other options?

If you can find Ford Remote Access, that's an option, too. It can do lock/unlock/remote start for about $50 a year, I believe.

I've got to put my kit up on eBay soon. That said, it worked well as I carried it through multiple vehicles.

I have this option in my 17. Well worth it. Works really well.
