Not sure if the 01 is the same as the 97 but I left this on another post asking about console removal...

Just did this to my 97 Mounty. It is SUPER easy. Remove the package tray and cup holders by grasping and pulling out by hand. There is a wiring block located directly under the stereo with a bolt holding it in place. Loosen the bolt until you can unplug the harness. There are two gold colored bolts on either side of where the wiring block was, remove these. Now if you move back until you are at the front edge of the armrest and look straight down you will see two more bolts that are exactly the size and color of the first two, remove them (you may need to grab them with needle nose pliers after they are loose to get them completely out of there) . This is the tricky part. You have to get in the back seat and pull the console straight back and slightly upward to release the two metal "fingers" that are holding the rear of the console to the floor. These fingers slide into a plate that is bolted to the floor that has two slots in it. DO NOT be shy when you are pulling the console to release these. Trust me, it takes some effort. When you get that released, just pull the whole console out through the rear seat, wiring and all. When you replace the console just reverse this procedure but make sure you don't get hung up where those four bolts go in as you are sliding the console forward and back into place. Hope this helps. Good luck!
